Outdoor Retailer played host to the outdoor community for
meetings, networking, education and order writing

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIF. – August 6, 2016 — Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, the premier trade event and community gathering featuring the best of the outdoor industry’s manufacturers and top retail buyers staged this week, August 3–6, 2016, at the Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.

This week, new brands were discovered and cornerstone brands had the opportunity to launch new product, giving specialty retailers at the show a firsthand chance to discover all that was new and innovative. The four-day event ended today after hosting approximately 29,000 attendees, and made a home for 1626 brands, of those 300 were new to Summer Market.

“Outdoor Retailer Summer Market not only provided a platform to conduct the business of the industry but continues to serve as the soul of the outdoor community, where the entire industry gathers,” said Marisa Nicholson, VP and Outdoor Retailer Show Director. “This Summer Market provided the best platform to collaborate and engage in a more personal, face-to-face way. We are happy to have facilitated this gathering which gave the industry the opportunity to conduct business, network, and participate in education sessions, all while refueling our passion and strengthening our community.”

Summer Market began with the annual Open Air Demo at Pineview Reservoir at the Cemetery Point location, in Huntsville, Utah. This location proved to be ideal for the outdoor industry's hands-on demo event that kicked off the week of meetings and product launches. With prime beach-front access, outdoor gear, technology and accessories took center stage highlighting the best of the 2016/2017 product offerings.

The tradeshow floor opened August 3, welcoming the entire outdoor industry to the Salt Palace Convention Center (including the three outdoor Pavilions). The morning of Day One and throughout the week, handshakes, high fives and hugs were seen throughout as retailers, reps, media and exhibitors reunited for a productive week of line presentations, order writing, marketing meetings and networking.

The show presented several opportunities to help specialty retailers and the media identify new products this week. The Media Preview gave journalist a sneak peek at new brands and products the night before the show opened giving them the jump on storylines.

The new BoardWalk, the Pavilions, and Venture Out provided access to new products and insights into trends along with helpful information on how best to sell and merchandise those products at retail. Additionally, the Open Air Demo featured more than 110 brands giving retailers the first glimpse and hands on experience with summer’s hottest new gear.

Networking is a vital part of every successful tradeshow. Outdoor Retailer continues to look for ways to bring the community together to share best practices and have some fun. The Industry Party, Outdoor Retailer’s flagship networking event, allowed the entire industry to gather at the end of Day 1. The industry party facilitated networking in a relaxed, celebratory, festival environment. The outdoor community enjoyed an evening of food, beer, music, storytelling, and fun. At Summer Market the industry was invited to countless events hosted by exhibitors to facilitate networking between the brands and specialty retailers. Each afternoon, the show floor was lively as best practices were shared, relationships were established or deepened and important introductions were made.

The International Trade Center hosted a happy hour gathering to introduce the delegation of international buyers brought to the show through the International Buyer Program. This unique program is a partnership between Outdoor Retailer and the U.S. Commercial Service (USCS) of the Department of Commerce, the official trade promotion agency of the federal government, to bring international retail buyers to the show and provided Outdoor Retailer exhibitors with a ready-made mechanism for developing and following up on foreign sales prospects, and support for brands looking to expand internationally.

More than 70 education sessions offered attendees the opportunity to hone their skills. RISE: Retail Inspired Specialty Excellence presented in collaboration with the Outdoor Industry Association and Grassroots Outdoor Alliance opened the show on Tuesday afternoon presenting an inspiring afternoon of education and peer-to-peer networking sessions. Specialty retailers and exhibitors found retailer best practices, and retail digital sessions with tips on how to capitalize on the digital age of marketing at the Forums in the Camp, supplier and trend sessions in the Trend + Design Center, and Outdoor University provided insights on trends, branding and marketing, retail strategy, leadership, sustainability and more.
